For Spoonflower's "Ultra-Steady" design challenge, I decided to create this pattern which depicts a green chalkboard covered in scientific equations and notations, along with 8 chalk portraits of important women who made great contributions to science.

The design challenge is a limited-palette challenge, where designers were asked to use one or more colors from Pantone's Ultra-Steady Palette of greens and blues. I chose the colors (PANTONE 6161 C, and PANTONE 6139 C at 30%) that reminded me of the green chalkboards used when I was in school.

The eight scientists featured in the design are:

KATHERINE JOHNSON, NASA mathematician and "hidden figure"
MARIE CURIE, researcher of radioactivity. 2-time Nobel Prize winner.
CHIEN-SHIUNG WU, physicist. Her "Wu Experiment" proved that identical particles do not always behave in the same manner. "First Lady of Physics."
ROSALIND FRANKLIN, chemist. Discovered DNA's double helix.
ADA LOVELACE, mathematician and writer. World's first computer programmer.
SALLY RIDE, teacher and astronaut.
MARIE-ANNE PAULZE LAVOISIER, "Mother of Modern Chemistry." Her contributions to the scientific method led to the discovery of Oxygen.
RACHEL CARSON, biologist and writer. Author of "Silent Spring" which spurred the modern Ecology movement.

Of course, there are many, many others who also made great contributions to science. I may have to create more designs to feature them!

About the Designer

J. Thomson

Studio Ten Design is the creation of artist/designer Jay Thomson.

Now based in Norfolk, Virginia, Jay spent more than 20 years in Philadelphia, PA. He has designed surface patterns for the Spoonflower and Zazzle online marketplaces for more than 12 years. His interest in surface design grew from a desire to learn how to make his own clothing, since nothing in the stores available at the time suited his style. For over twenty years, he's been making his own shirts and other apparel items.

Now his designs are available printed on a wide variety of fabrics for home and apparel, wallpaper, home goods and gift ware. Custom knit wear designed by Jay is on the horizon.
